Andreas Bergel

Director of Beverage & Food at W Bali – Seminyak

E: Describe your typical day in a sentence.

Andreas: Imagine being on a speeding train with a cool design and going through its compartments filled with creativity, fun, food and drinks, and a lot of surprises!

E: So how did you come to be director of Beverage & Food at W Bali – Seminyak?

A: I guess like how most of the best things happen: right time, right place! I was spending a good amount of time in Dubai before I came to the island.

E: What’s the toughest part of your job?

A: Going home with the belief the job is done when it’s never actually ever done. I know I am not alone with that feeling.

E: And what makes you smile at work?

A: Hey, I work in the most exciting place I can think of with a bunch of amazing characters and have endless passion for it all.

E: What motivates you?

A: It may sound cheesy but I made my hobby my job. Working in teams with people from many different nations, cultures, educations and hearing all their stories is already amazing, but being able to learn and contribute to their life and future, that’s my fuel.

E: Would things fall apart if you weren’t around?

A: In my experience, it doesn’t fall apart at all, it can get even better as they want to show off a little or make me stay away longer!

E: Who in your team deserves more recognition and why?

A: The newbies. I always think about how I feel when I start new somewhere not knowing anyone, but I have a buddy to look after me. The right acknowledgment, credit and training also ensure that they might take my job one day.

E: Why should people choose W Bali – Seminyak to dine or drink?

A: I have at least 92 reasons! But the best is that you can literally spend all day and night here and you don’t even have to stay with us. From breakfast at the beach lounging lazily by the pool, to lunch in a wine cellar and a seafood BBQ for dinner, finishing with late night parties and shisha.

E: Away from work, what’s your favourite place to eat?

A: I am glad to have many friends working in the F&B industry here in Seminyak and I am happy to trial their new dishes as I easily get bored.

E: How do you unwind?

A: On a flight to explore new spots in Indonesia (where there is no mobile phone network!)

E: Finally, any advice for those looking to break into the industry?

A: Nothing is easy, especially hospitality. Be assured that your family is aware that you can’t attend all festive occasions, that your mistress will always be your mobile phone, and quit as soon as you think that you do it for the money.
