MoonLite Kitchen and Bar

SundayBrunch

Dramatically perched high above the crashing surf of Seminyak’s glittering coastline, MoonLite Kitchen and Bar at Anantara Seminyak Bali Resort is quite the spectacle. This trendy rooftop venue is reminiscent of a James Bond bachelor pad, with crude black iron accents and stunning infinity pools fringing the open air decking. But this restaurant not only serves as a glamorous locale for a classy Sunday afternoon, it is one of the few places on the island to offer a very different brunching ritual…

Choosing to eschew the traditions of typical Sunday brunch food to instead celebrate the diversity of Singaporean cuisine, MoonLite Kitchen and Bar’s new Hawker Food Culture Sunday Brunch has turned our weekend cravings upside down. Paying homage to Singapore’s multi-ethnic history, the brunch presents authentic dishes from across China, India and the Malay archipelago to truly represent the core cuisines brought to Singapore many moons ago – and it makes for an extraordinary feasting affair.

The brunch kicks off from noon onwards every Sunday, signalled by the soulful sounds of a live band and the sweet aromas of roast duck, steaming pork belly buns and the honey-soy glaze of crispy-skinned chicken wings. An à la carte style setup sees a menu that’s split into five key categories, ranging from the “Bounty from the Straits” section showcasing a distinctive selection of ocean delicacies, to the “Wok Fried” noodles, stir fries and rice dishes, and the “Kampung Farm Raised” section that dishes up different roasted, grilled and curried meat varieties.

Unsurprisingly, the bright orange chili crab with fried mantau is the brunch’s ultra-popular signature, served with a shell cracker to freshly extract the prized juicy meat from inside, whilst the spicy seafood and coconut laksa lemak is so authentic it rivals the originals found in Singapore’s most famous food markets.

Another standout is the banana leaf grilled stingray, lightly spiced by a sambal belecan, and the three neat and crispy pastry shells that come neatly filled with prawn kuih pi ti. The Hainan chicken rice is as sticky and succulent as you’d expect from a traditional hawker, while the potato and pea samosas and the roti paratha with curry sauce bring the rich spices of India to the table and make for hearty accompaniments to each bite.

Taking a total U-turn to give spiced-up taste buds a refreshing cooling off, the dessert selection makes use of local produce and quintessential Indonesian flavours. A west Javanese vanilla and passionfruit cheesecake is both fluffy and creamy, and the duck egg crème brûlée is flavoured by zesty lemongrass and finished with a crunchy coating.
