Few names in Japanese whisky carry the same weight as Nikka. Built on decades of quiet determination and a deep respect for tradition, the brand traces its roots to Masataka Taketsuru, the man who introduced authentic whisky-making to Japan. What began as a bold ambition in the 1930s has evolved into a globally celebrated label known for its balanced, layered character and distinctive approach.

Taketsuru’s journey began in Scotland, where he immersed himself in the craft of whisky-making. From Speyside to Campbeltown, he learned the importance of patience, technique and environment, lessons that would later shape every aspect of Nikka. Upon returning to Japan, he chose the windswept coast of Hokkaido to build his first distillery, Yoichi, in 1934. The location was no accident; its cool climate and coastal air offered the kind of conditions he’d experienced in Scotland, creating the foundation for whiskies that felt both familiar and new.

As Nikka grew, so did its range. The addition of Miyagikyo Distillery in 1969 introduced a softer contrast to the bold character of Yoichi. Together, these two sites shaped a portfolio that balances strength with subtlety. International recognition followed, especially for expressions like From The Barrel, which continues to earn praise for its complexity and depth.

This year marks a new milestone. Back in May, Nikka was officially introduced to the Indonesian market, opening access to its acclaimed range for the country’s growing base of whisky enthusiasts. The launch took place in Bali and Jakarta, and were filled with stories, conversations and a closer look at what makes Nikka distinct.

Koki Kitamura, Nikka’s Regional Manager for Asia, hosted a masterclass at The St. Regis Bar in Jakarta that explored the brand’s philosophy and approach. Alongside the tasting, guests were invited to enjoy signature cocktails by Aki Nakata, the bartender at Origin Bar, Shangri-La Singapore, and winner of the Nikka Perfect Serve 2024 Southeast Asia edition. Her drinks offered a unique way to experience the whisky, using thoughtful combinations to highlight texture and balance.

Bringing Nikka to Indonesia is the result of a longstanding partnership between La Maison du Whisky and PT Pantja Artha Niaga. Both have worked closely to ensure that the launch reflects the care behind the product while honouring its heritage.

Timed with the 40th anniversary of From The Barrel, Nikka’s arrival in Indonesia feels both grounded and timely, offering a new audience the opportunity to discover a whisky shaped not just by geography, but by philosophy, precision and time.

RECIPE PO’OINO FASHIONED BY STANISLAV VADRNA

Bold and full of character, Nikka Whisky From The Barrel is a blended whisky that doesn’t hold back. Known for its depth and complexity, it brings rich flavours into sharp focus with every sip. Confident in style and unapologetically expressive, this is a whisky that leaves a lasting impression.

Ingredients:

  • 45ml Nikka Whisky From The Barrel
  • 7.5ml–10ml beer syrup (made from a fruity IPA beer and Okinawan black sugar)*
  • 1 dash Peychaud bitters
  • 1 dash black walnut bitters
  • 1 dash vanilla bitters

Method:

Build the drink in a double old-fashioned glass. Stir gently with ice to combine and chill. Garnish with a caramelised sesame cookie, grapefruit zest and orange zest.

Beer Syrup:

Add 2 cups of beer and 1 cup of sugar to a saucepan. Gently heat the mixture until reduced by half, being careful not to boil. More sugar can be added for a sweeter profile. A common ratio is 1.5 cups of sugar to 2 cups of beer for a richer result. Avoiding boiling the syrup; gently heat it just enough to dissolve the sugar, then remove it from the heat.
