The Balvenie, as the main partner of Jia CURATED 2025, brought The Makers Project to Bali in collaboration with Indonesian multidisciplinary artist Lianggono of Studio Lianggono. Rooted in a shared respect for time-honoured craft, this special presentation featured Wang Sinawang, a thoughtful installation inspired by The Balvenie’s traditions of Home Grown Barley and the Malting Floor, key components of its Five Rare Crafts. Taking place at Bali Festival Park from 14-18 August 2025, the event provided a unique look into the artistry that defines both fine whisky making and contemporary Indonesian craft.
The Balvenie continued to honour its Five Rare Crafts: Home Grown Barley, the Malting Floor, Copper Stills, Cooperage and the guidance of the Malt Master. As the only distillery in Scotland that practises all Five Rare Crafts, each bottle reflected dedication, time and the skill of those involved in its creation. The Makers Project aimed to celebrate the artisans behind these traditions, showcasing the quiet skill and care that contribute to the depth and character of every drop.
Lianggono described Wang Sinawang as a Javanese term that encourages reflection, emphasising the beauty of the creation process shaped by time and the knowledge of the human hand. He expressed that both whisky and memory are moulded not by speed but by presence. Anchored by the installation from Studio Lianggono, the experience guided guests into a meditative space, enriched with natural textures and curated whisky flight tastings led by Jyri Pylkkänen, Southeast Asia Regional Malts Brand Ambassador.
