Glenfiddich Launch Grand Yozakura

Glenfiddich Launch Grand Yozakura

Glenfiddich, the renowned Scottish distillery known for pushing the boundaries of whisky craftsmanship, has unveiled its latest masterpiece: Grand Yozakura. This limited-edition single malt scotch whisky marks a groundbreaking moment in the world of spirits as it becomes the first to be finished in rare Japanese ex-Awamori casks. With a 29-year ageing process at Glenfiddich’s Dufftown distillery, Grand Yozakura embodies a unique blend of Scottish and Japanese traditions, resulting in a flavour profile like no other.

Grand Yozakura’s distinctive flavour profile is a testament to the innovative spirit of Glenfiddich. This whisky owes its unique finish to the use of oak barrels that once cradled Awamori, Japan’s oldest distilled spirit. The result is a whisky with fruity notes, as well as almonds, oak tones, hints of cinnamon, and a little herbal on the nose. On the palate, it offers layers of toasted oak, vanilla, spices, lemon, green apple, warm earthy tones and silky tannin. The finish is a lasting oak sensation, a testament to its 29-year ageing process.

Awamori, traditionally made from long-grain indica rice and aged in oak casks, has preserved its production techniques for over 500 years. These rare ex-Awamori casks brought a piece of Japan’s rich heritage to the world of Scotch whisky. Grand Yozakura celebrates the essence of Hanami, Japan’s cherry blossom festival, where nature’s beauty is appreciated through the sakura. The Yozakura, or ‘night sakura,’ adds an element of mystery and renewal to this celebration, a moment captured in the fleeting taste of Grand Yozakura.

This unique whisky represents a transient opportunity to experience a beautiful collision of cultures and flavors, as once these rare liquids are gone, they can never be replicated. The packaging of Grand Yozakura is a work of art in itself, bridging the gap between cultures. Designed by Japanese artist, June, it features an illustration that incorporates Japanese culture and landscapes, accompanied by a bespoke topper and a traditional poem printed onto each specially designed outer. This attention to detail reflects the deep respect for both Scottish and Japanese traditions that went into creating this whisky.

Granted the opportunity to sit down and have a talk with Glenfiddich’s Global Brand Ambassador, Struan Grant Ralph himself, we decided to pick on his brain about his illustrious career and the ultra-limited Grand Yozakura.

E: The whisky industry has seen significant changes and innovations in recent years. How does the brand adapt and stay relevant in a constantly evolving market?
A: I’d say that Glenfiddich has a unique position as the market leader. The brand has a nice juxtaposition between being very authentic and yet remaining modern. Yes, there are a lot of craft distilling all around the world right now. But I feel like a lot of them are trying to emulate what we’ve been doing for a very, very long time. And I think we have to protect that. There’s a reason why I think historically, people really considered single malt and Scotch more than they did. As the original guys, we just focus on quality and excellence and let the liquid do the talking.

E: The Grand Yozakura is an exciting blend of Scottish and Japanese traditions. Can you elaborate on how these cultures harmonise?
A:
Okinawa is to Awamori what Speyside is to single malt. So the natural DNA of both drinks is very rooted in both areas. I think the Japanese are renowned for technicality of production, they very much strive for perfection – including Awamori. I feel like the Scots shares a very similar ethos, in terms of the execution and perfecting the single malt whisky.

E: Given that Grand Yozakura is a limited edition offering, how would you suggest whisky aficionados best experienced the unique blend?
A:
A good company, responsibly, and just with an open mind – and I’m going to explain why. You will be getting big and bold flavours of the Grand Yozakura. The 21 or 23 is for the aperitivo, the 26 is when the evening is at its energetic peak. The 29 would be perfect for what comes after, when everything has mellowed down, quieter and more intimate. It’s the perfect dessert whisky for your fun night.
