The Iron Fairies Hong Kong

The Iron Fairies Hong Kong

Watermelon daiquiri with fairy dust

The idea for The Iron Fairies was dreamt up by acclaimed Australian designer Ashley Sutton, based on his real-life experience working in the iron mines of Western Australia. The concept first manifested itself as a trilogy of books about mischievous fairies taking over an iron ore workshop (books available behind the bar) before being transformed into a series of outlets in Bangkok, Tokyo, New York and within the Chinachem Hollywood Centre, Central.

Enter from Pottinger Street and once inside allow yourself a few minutes to absorb the detail. The main workshop area features huge iron chandeliers that spread a warm glow over the large circular cast iron tables and worn leather stools. The floor and bar are made from heavy reclaimed timber and the walls faced with kiln bricks.

With countless cast iron fairies dispersed throughout, the décor is just as startling. There are over 10,000 butterflies on thin copper rods suspended from the ceiling and 12,000 bottles of coloured fairy dust hung around the bar and a myriad of tools and books. The main workshop holds up to 80 guests. There are also six intimate private rooms ensconced behind 2-inch-thick iron furnace and casting doors for that special occasion.

The Iron Fairies feels like a fantasy-film set but with a drinks and bar menu that rivals anywhere in the city. Check out the range of classic and crafted cocktails like the Watermelon Daiquiri with Fairy Dust or Smoke in a Bottle No.1 or choose from the boutique beers and wine list. Food-wise, signature dishes include the fried pork knuckle, honey toast and a range of handcrafted Australian beef burgers.
