Jumeirah Bali Introduces Mawedangan: A Soulful Tea Ritual Inspired by Royal Traditions

Blending Javanese ceremonial grace with Balinese serenity, Jumeirah Bali unveils Mawedangan, a signature cultural ritual that invites guests on a journey of reflection, connection and sensory elegance.

This newly launched Curated Ritual encourages guests to embrace a deeper connection with Indonesian heritage. Officially unveiled during an intimate gathering at The Library, Mawedangan pays refined homage to Patehan, the traditional Javanese tea ceremony once reserved for royalty. Thoughtfully reimagined, it now offers a cherished experience exclusively for resort guests, enriching every stay with cultural authenticity and opportunities for quiet reflection.

More than a simple tea ritual, Mawedangan is an immersive sensory journey set within the resort’s tranquil open-air spaces. The experience begins with a guided tasting of Indonesia’s finest teas, including green tea, black tea, fragrant Java jasmine, white tea and vibrant rosella. Guests choose a tea that resonates with their senses, which is then paired with an assortment of traditional Jajan Pasar (snacks) and calming aromatherapy, creating a moment of stillness and presence.

Accompanied by symbolic gestures, delicate narration and gentle ceremonial touches, every element of Mawedangan is steeped in cultural significance. During its official launch, the ritual featured a graceful Javanese theatrical dance, followed by a ceremonial procession carrying sacred objects, culminating in a poetic couple’s dance inspired by classical court traditions.

As the official Curated Ritual of Jumeirah Bali, Mawedangan reflects the resort’s philosophy of offering meaningful and place-rooted experiences. Held twice weekly and during select seasonal occasions, this exclusive ritual cannot be found anywhere else and is deeply rooted in the resort’s Majapahit-inspired design, spiritual ambience, and unwavering commitment to honouring both Balinese and Javanese heritage.
