General Manager at Café del Mar Bali
–
E: What are your responsibilities?
Kirk: My responsibility here is pretty simple, I basically support everybody. I support my staff so they can serve the customers better, and I also support the investors. So yeah, I support everybody.
E: What makes a typical day?
K: Lately, my days are filled with reviewing the opening stages of this venue. We just opened literally on the first day of September, so there’s still a lot of things to be done. We’re also sorting out plans for next year.
E: Your best attribute?
K: I would say my experiences. I have learned a lot from the choices that I made over the years, and I do hope that my bad choices allow me to make good choices now. I have been in the industry for 25 years and I think I can share my experiences with the people I’m working with.
E: Team player or team leader?
K: This is tough, but I think a little bit of both. Of course, my position right now is as the leader of a great team, but I don’t think I’m going to be able to make a decision without the support of these people that are working with me.
E: Who has been the most influential figure in your career to date?
K: I have two. The first one is the former CEO of a company I worked for in Las Vegas; she taught me to see the world and encouraged me to soak in new culture when I moved to the Bahamas. The other one is the CEO that I worked for in Singapore. He taught me how to create healthy communication between me and the investors.
E: Name one really special thing about your venue?
K: I want to say the architecture, just because it catches your eyes from the outside. But the staff really do make this place stand out. They’re the ones who will make your visit a complete experience.
E: How do you unwind?
K: It’s pretty simple. I mostly spend my day off reading or working out, but since living in Bali, I get to indulge in one of my favourite hobbies, which is surfing.
E: Dead or alive, who would you like to take out to dinner?
K: It’s either Einstein or my grandpa. I enjoy learning physics, so I grew up reading a lot of Einstein’s books. As for my grandpa, he was such a cool guy, but he died when I was young. So, it’d be great to spend more time with him.
