At the Hungarian Gastro Week, running from 25 to 29 November 2024, at the Signatures Restaurant in Hotel Indonesia Kempinski Jakarta, guests will have the chance to experience an authentic taste of Hungary by Chef Gergó Rácz with some of the country’s most beloved dishes paired with traditional drinks that offer a fun twist on the classics.
Hungarian cuisine is a delicious mix of rich flavours, hearty dishes and vibrant traditions that reflect the country’s diverse culture. It’s all about bringing people together to share meals made with care and time-tested recipes.
The food combines comforting, filling dishes with delicate pastries and creative mixes of sweet and savoury tastes. Paprika is a key ingredient, adding depth and warmth to many dishes, while fresh, seasonal ingredients make each meal full of flavour.
One of Hungary’s most iconic dishes, goulash soup (Gulyásleves), is a perfect example of rustic cooking. Made with tender beef, vegetables and paprika, it’s a dish that warms the body and comforts the soul. For a lighter option, fruit soup (Gyümölcsleves) offers a refreshing twist, made with seasonal fruits and often served chilled – an ideal choice for the warm climate of Indonesia.
Every meal in Hungary is finished with a drink to accompany it, and the Hungarian Gastro Week will offer a selection of beverages to pair with the food. Fröccs, a refreshing spritzer made with Hungarian wine and soda water, is a fun and fizzy option for a casual drink. In contrast, the robust red wine Egri Bikavér (Bull’s Blood of Eger) offers a more refined experience. For those with a sweet tooth, Tokaji Aszú, a renowned dessert wine often called “The wine of kings and the king of wines,” will be the perfect way to round off the meal.
Although Hungarian and Indonesian cuisines come from different parts of the world, they have many similarities. Both celebrate bold, vibrant flavours and take pride in slow-cooked dishes that bring out the essence of each ingredient. Hungary’s signature dishes, like goulash and pörkölt, are rich and characterful, much like Indonesia’s rendang or soto.
This celebration of Hungarian cuisine is an invitation to explore the country’s culinary heritage through its most cherished dishes. Experience the delight of enjoying delicious food with wonderful company and savour the flavours that have been passed down through the generations. Guests are invited to raise a glass and toast to good health, or as they say in Hungary, Egészségedre!
