The Sustainable Spirit of East Indies Gin

The Sustainable Spirit of East Indies Gin

Spice Islands Distilling Co. is revolutionising gin-making by blending tradition with sustainability. With a commitment to quality and the planet, the distillery focuses on producing premium spirits while reducing its environmental footprint. East Indies Gin is at the core of its ethos, a product inspired by the rich history of the Maluku Islands, known for its rare and exotic spices like mace, nutmeg and clove. These botanicals are carefully sourced from Indonesia’s lush archipelago, creating a gin that is as rich in flavour as it is in heritage.

The distillery’s dedication to sustainability extends beyond the botanicals. The spent botanicals from its signature East Indies Gin are repurposed as feed for local free-range organic black heritage pigs, demonstrating a thoughtful, eco-friendly approach to production. In addition, the distillery has introduced a bottle recycling programme to minimise waste, ensuring that every step of the production process is as green as precise.

East Indies Archipelago Dry Gin

Crafted in small batches, East Indies Gin is distilled using a 550-litre hybrid copper still, lovingly named Gede, after the Balinese tradition of naming their firstborn child. Handmade by Carl GmbH in Germany, this still uses pot and column distillation methods to produce a spirit of exceptional smoothness and complexity. The intense botanicals, distilled at a remarkable 94 percent ABV, are carefully diluted with purified water from deep wells to achieve a final ABV of around 40-43 percent, allowing the flavours of Indonesia’s exotic spices to shine through.

Through its craft, the distillery not only raises the bar for Indonesian gin but also strives to create a positive impact on both local communities and the environment. By blending tradition with innovation, Spice Islands Distilling Co. is paving the way for a sustainable and flavourful future in gin-making.
