Along with Christmas, Thanksgiving Day is the USA’s most beloved annual holiday and takes place on the fourth Thursday of November.
The origins of Thanksgiving date back to 1621 when a group of English pilgrims in Massachusetts shared a feast with a tribe of Native Americans to celebrate the plentiful harvest. Over time this spread from state to state before President Abraham Lincoln finally declared it a national holiday across the whole country in 1863.
Over the last 150 years, the global influence of American culture has been enormous and today Thanksgiving dinners and menus can be found throughout the region with some of the best in Singapore where the large American expatriate community reaches out just as the pilgrims did in 1621.
These include lavish annual events like The St. Regis Thanksgiving Dinner at Brasserie Les Saveurs, special menus at American grills and restaurants like LAVO and Bedrock Bar & Grill, Luke’s Oyster Bar and Chophouse, and iconic smokehouse Meat Smith, which will be serving up a complete Thanksgiving feast with sweet potato casserole, corn bread and the turkey.
There are fabulous buffets too like the Marriott Café’s Thanksgiving Celebration and Brewerkz Thanksgiving Buffet, where Singapore’s longest-running microbrewery offers roast turkey and bone-in-gammon ham served with a side of sweet potatoes with marshmallows, finished with traditional pumpkin pie.
Thanksgiving Day is 22nd November in 2018 so go ahead and enjoy the feast.
