The Basement Bar

Caramel Old Fashioned

Hidden beneath the understated surroundings of The Dharmawangsa Square, The Basement Bar doesn’t make itself known. There’s no signage, no hint of what’s inside. Just a quiet doorway and the unspoken understanding that whatever happens downstairs remain there.

Upon entering, the atmosphere transforms almost immediately. The lighting softens, background noise recedes and a sense of calm envelops the space. Dark wood panels line the walls, and leather chairs offer firm yet comfortable seating, inviting guests to relax and linger. Tables are arranged with just enough space for privacy, fostering uninterrupted conversations.

The bar itself sets the tone for the entire venue. Each drink is carefully built, guided by a concept called Neo Kaikoku, which draws inspiration from Japan’s opening to the world in the 19th century. That sense of exchange occurs in the details, where Japanese clarity meets Southeast Asian rhythm. Flavours are layered but never overwhelming; guests may notice how one note lingers while another gently fades. A sip may begin with something familiar, only to shift into something unexpected.

One standout cocktail is the Chocolate Martini, which features vodka as its base and emphasises smooth textures and rich flavours. This drink combines the classic elegance of a martini with the delightful indulgence of chocolate, creating a playful yet sophisticated balance. Meanwhile, the Caramel Old Fashioned reinterprets the traditional cocktail by using Japanese whisky. A hint of salt enhances the caramel notes, resulting in a deeper richness that leaves a lasting impression. Matcha-Maru, in contrast, takes cues from the traditional tea ritual. With matcha, Roku gin, egg white and a splash of Champagne, it offers a smooth, balanced flavour that unfolds gradually with each sip.
