Two acclaimed chefs reunite for a fiery evening of charcoal-grilled creations and creative flair in Bali this August.
Bali food lovers are in for a sizzling treat as Waatu at The Ungasan Clifftop Resort welcomes back one of Australia’s most celebrated culinary talents for the long-awaited Yakitori Showdown. On Thursday, 29 August 2025, Executive Chef Lachlan Budd will be joined by his old friend and collaborator, Chef Joel Bickford, for an evening of inspired cooking over open flames.
This marks a reunion between two chefs whose previous partnership left a lasting impression. Chef Budd, known for his deep understanding of local flavours and nature-driven cooking style, will share the grill with Chef Bickford, the award-winning Culinary Director of The Point Group in Sydney. With nearly 30 chef’s hats to his name, Chef Bickford is celebrated for his artistry with flavour, texture and presentation, making this a meeting of creative equals.
Guests can expect a relaxed yet refined poolside setting as the chefs present a six-course menu cooked over coals, showcasing Waatu’s signature smoky style. The dishes will remain a surprise until the night itself, adding to the anticipation.
After dinner, the energy shifts as Waatu hosts its very first Supper Club. Behind closed doors, guests will enjoy wood-fired snacks, paired with select whiskies from event sponsor LARK, a lively, intimate after-party to round off the night.
“It’s fantastic to welcome an old friend like Joel back to the kitchen,” says Chef Budd. “We had such a great time cooking together before, and this time we’re taking it to another level.”
For those who can’t make the Yakitori Showdown, the duo will also host a special Asado night at Sundays Beach Club on Wednesday, 27 August 2025, another chance to catch these masters at work.
