In June, Alaya Resort Ubud held its exciting The Ubud Viking Flair and Cocktails Challenge 2018 in collaboration with the Asia Bartenders Association (ABA) at the resort’s Manisan Bali restaurant. Having previously held similar competitions in locations like Kuta and Nusa Dua, this time ABA Indonesia headed to Ubud to encourage a new generation of bar staff to hone their skills in mixology.
ABA President Agung Yoga explained, “This challenge is a chance for all bartenders in Ubud to take their skills to the next level. The competition is open to all local bartenders who can participate by registering with ABA Indonesia.”
Alaya Hotels & Resorts General Manager Dewi Mas also commented that as the event was the first of its kind in Ubud, Alaya Resort Ubud felt honoured to host the Viking Flair and Cocktails Challenge 2018. She also hoped to see Ubud as a destination where guests came to seek creative cocktails in the future.
At the event, the contenders showcased their talents in the flair category by making two drinks in the Working Flair Exhibition before going into the next round. They also had additional time to create one more cocktail based purely on technical precision rather than theatrical value.
The judging panel comprised professional bartenders well-known in Indonesia’s mixology scene: Agung Raka, Agung Darmawan, Agung Udiana, Bayu Hendra and Rama Suwiyoga. Meanwhile the sponsors were Alaya Resort Ubud, Manisan Bali, Himpunan Bartenders Indonesia, Iceland Vodka, Empire Gin, Prost Beer, Toffin, Squeeze, Drum Green Label, Mix Max, Orang Tua, Black Jack, The BAR Times and Royal Casa Ganesha.
With total cash prizes of IDR15 million, the event attracted 27 bartenders, including one from Russia, to bring their A-game. The first place went to I Wayan Eka Darmawan, who brought home a IDR5 million prize, second place went to Putu Purnayasa with a IDR4 million prize and third place I Gede Aldi Suardana with IDR3 million. Other winners included I Putu Arya Daging Arta in fourth place with IDR2 million cash prize and Ilona Turintseva, who was awarded the best cocktail and received a trophy, certificate, charter and IDR1 million cash prize.
