At the opposite end of the scale to the Highball is the Old-Fashioned glass, also known as a Lowball, Rocks or Tumbler glass. This smaller and squatter cousin features a thick bottom to help maintain the temperature of its contents, which is often served “on the rocks”. It is also used for cocktails built without a shaker or mixing glass where the components are simply poured into the glass over ice and gently stirred.
The wide brim of the glass helps to release the flavours of the drink while the thick base allows the non-liquid ingredients of a cocktail to be muddled and mashed before the main liquid ingredients are added. As such, the Old Fashioned glass is often used for Negronis, White Russians, Stingers and of course, the Old Fashioned.
