Mastering the Art of Winemaking

Peter Kelly

Peter Kelly’s journey to becoming a renowned Barossa winemaker is anything but easy. Born in Queensland, he grew up amidst the sun-soaked beaches of the Sunshine Coast. While studying anthropology at university, he began dreaming of crafting wine and pursuing a career as a winemaker. The idea of combining his analytical skills with hands-on work to create a product loved by many became a cherished goal, prompting him to learn as much as possible.

During his studies, Peter gained invaluable experience in McLaren Vale. His enthusiasm for wine extended beyond the cellar, as he also shared his knowledge as a Wine Educator at the National Wine Education Training Centre. With his academic achievements and growing reputation, Peter secured a winemaking role in the Barossa after graduating.

His talent soon garnered recognition. In 2009, he was awarded the “Young Winemaker of the Year – Member’s Choice” title by The Wine Society. The following year, he was named Dux of the Australian Wine Research Institute’s Advanced Wine Assessment Course. His expertise led him to serve as a judge in numerous wine competitions, where he presided over more than 30 wine show circuits as both Panel Chair and Chair of Judges.

Peter Kelly has worked at several iconic South Australian wineries, and in 2016, he became the Chief Winemaker at Thorn-Clarke Wines. There, he expertly balances the rich, bold flavours of Barossa wines with the delicate nuances of Eden Valley styles. For Peter, winemaking is not just a profession; it is a passion captured in every bottle.
