The Margarita

The Margarita

Nothing says summer quite like a tangy Margarita. Served either shaken with ice, blended to create the frozen margarita or even served straight, this tequila-based concoction is a favourite in the sunshine and synonymous with carefree drinking. It comes in just about any glass, from the special Margarita Coupe, the classic cocktail glass or even a hi-ball, which can be rimmed with salt, sugar or a wedge of lime.

The History

The origins of the Margarita are as cloudy as the drink itself and the variations as plentiful as the claims of invention. One of the earliest theories goes back to 1938 when Carlos “Danny” Herrera created the drink at his restaurant Rancho La Gloria, Mexico. The drink, he says, was created for customer and former Ziegfeld dancer, Marjorie King, who was apparently allergic to many spirits, but not to tequila. Plenty of further claims to the piquant concoction come hereafter, some more like the modern versions than others, but there always seems to be three common denominators: tequila, triple sec and loads of zest.
