Ascott Sudirman Jakarta marks the Mid-Autumn season with Imperial Mooncake, a six-flavour collection that pairs classic fillings with modern twists. The standout? A mung bean mooncake with a splash of Baileys.
Mooncakes have something of a reputation problem. For every one that is genuinely savoured, another gets passed politely from household to household, still in its box, until the festival quietly ends. Ascott Sudirman Jakarta is betting that its Imperial Mooncake will break the cycle.
The collection arrives for the Mid-Autumn season under the theme “A Taste of Timeless Tradition”. Its six flavours lean classic with a modern edge. White Lotus, the lotus-seed paste purists expect, sits alongside Pandan Coconut, which pairs coconut with the fragrant screwpine leaf behind so many Indonesian sweets. Red Bean and Sunflower Seed adds a little crunch.
Chocolate Cashew and Durian Choco Chips cater to those who like their heritage with a sweet streak. The one to seek out, though, is the signature Mung Bean Baileys. Soft, mellow mung bean meets the creamy Irish liqueur, an unexpected pairing that makes it one of the highlights of this year’s range.
Presentation gets equal attention. The mooncakes come in a blue box with a sophisticated design, as suited to gifting as to the family table. At IDR888,000 net per box, even the price carries a hint of ceremony, since eight has long been associated with prosperity in Chinese culture.
For General Manager Melvin J. Kindangen, the meaning matters as much as the recipe. “Mooncakes have always held a special place in the Mid-Autumn celebration, not only as a dish, but also as a symbol of togetherness and sharing,” he says.
Whether this box gets passed along or opened on the spot is anyone’s guess. The Baileys one, we suspect, won’t make it very far.
