At Alunê, a familiar Balinese flower becomes the starting point for a celebration rooted in Mexican tradition.
In Mexico, marigolds are closely associated with Día de los Muertos, placed on ofrendas to help guide loved ones back to the celebration. The same flower carries its own significance in Bali, appearing in offerings and ceremonies across the island by its local name, bunga gemitir. At Alunê, the flower becomes a point of connection between the two traditions.
The oceanfront venue at W Bali – Seminyak brings this Mexican tradition to Bali on 31 October and 1 November 2026. Rather than treating Día de los Muertos simply as a Halloween theme, the two-day programme draws from its meaning as a celebration of lives and memories, with food, music, flowers, and gatherings shaping the occasion.
That idea extends into the kitchen as Chef Silverio Altamirano creates an exclusive menu for the occasion. With more than 23 years of international experience across over 20 countries, the Mexican chef now works in Indonesia as a Latin Cuisine Consultant Chef in Asia, bringing his knowledge of Mexican food and culture to Alunê.
The celebration begins at 5pm on 31 October, when DJ performances, live entertainment, and festive activities take over the venue, before resuming the next day from 1pm, taking the seasonal fun from day to night. The choice of Alunê also connects with the venue’s understanding of life through cycles, from the movement of the moon and tides to the shift between day and night. Día de los Muertos introduces another expression of that idea, centred on the belief that memories and connections continue as life changes.
By bringing the tradition into an oceanfront Bali setting, Alunê creates a meeting point between two cultural traditions. The marigold sits at the centre, familiar in Bali yet carrying a different significance in Mexico, while the celebration around it gives remembrance a distinctly social setting.
