The Hermitage, a Tribute Portfolio Hotel, Jakarta was recently delighted to welcome Ben Ungermann, Australia MasterChef runner up 2017, during his world tour. Lucky guests were able to indulge in lunch and dinner sessions, as well as specialty workshops, hosted by Ben at L’Avenue Restaurant and Courtyard in the hotel during the Food Journey with an Australian Master Chef programme.

Gaining recognition during the MasterChef competition for his ice cream and dubbed the Ice Cream King, Ben has since opened Ungermann Brothers retro ice cream parlour with his family. At The Hermitage, guests were able to join Ben’s ice cream masterclass to learn his secrets from the maestro himself. Diners were also able to taste Ben’s authentic dishes, which he describes as rustic with a hint of sophistication and diverse, unique flavour combinations, during lunches and dinners at the hotel.

Growing up in Australia with Dutch and Indonesian heritage, Ben originally studied multimedia and worked in sports retail management, joining the 2017 MasterChef competition with his family’s encouragement. He has since been able to work with some of the best chefs internationally, including Yotam Ottolenghi, Clare Smyth and Heston Blumenthal.
