E: What are your responsibilities?
A: As the director of food and beverage at our ultra-luxury hotel in Jakarta, my role is multifaceted and revolves around ensuring exceptional memories for our guests. One of my top priorities is taking care of my employees, ensuring they have everything they need to thrive in their roles and fostering a positive work environment. I also take great pleasure in creating memorable experiences in our restaurants and bars, constantly striving to offer something new and exciting to our local and international guests.
E: Who has been the most influential figure in your career to date?
A: Firstly, my parents played a crucial role in shaping my passion for the food and beverage industry. Throughout my career, I have had the privilege of working with many talented managers who have left lasting impressions on me. One notable figure was the general manager of a property in Cambodia, where I worked. Another influential figure in my career was a German director of food and beverage I collaborated with while opening a hotel in China’s Guangdong Province, becoming my mentor and a close friend, offering invaluable guidance and support that continues to this day.
E: Name one really special thing about your restaurants at The Langham, Jakarta.
A: Alongside our talented team, we collaborate with a number of renowned restaurants that offer a diverse culinary experience. From the newly opened Morimoto, the British restaurant Tom’s by Tom Aikens to Langham’s very own T’ang Court and the world’s best bar, Artesian, each outlet is treated as an individual unit rather than simply a hotel restaurant. This approach allows us to create unique and captivating dining destinations that could stand alone and be just as remarkable.
E: The most important trait to have in your work?
A: The most crucial trait to possess in my line of work is adaptability. It is essential to be open to change, receptive to new ideas, and capable of navigating various situations that arise in the dynamic hospitality industry. Additionally, maintaining a humble demeanour while also holding onto a clear vision has been instrumental in my professional growth. Furthermore, recognising the power of teamwork is vital. Ultimately, the combination of adaptability, humility, and a strong emphasis on teamwork enables me to thrive in my role and drive positive results in the workplace.
E: Tell us one thing about you that not many people know.
A: I’m genuinely captivated by the sense of smell. It’s almost like my nose has a superpower of its own! And here’s the cherry on top: my absolute favourite book and movie of all time is “Perfume” by Patrick Süßkind. This captivating story explores the power of scent in a unique and enthralling way. So, if you ever want to discuss the art of perfumery or dive into the world of olfactory delights, I’m your go-to person!
