The Balvenie Pours Creativity with Studio Lianggono in Bali at Jia CURATED

Craftsmanship unites in spirit. The Balvenie brings The Makers Project to Bali, partnering with renowned Indonesian artist Lianggono for Wang Sinawang, a captivating installation that celebrates the patience, precision and soul of true craftsmanship.

The Balvenie, renowned for its exceptional craftsmanship in whisky making, has brought its celebrated The Makers Project to the vibrant island of Bali. Partnering with Indonesian multidisciplinary artist Lianggono of Studio Lianggono, they present an extraordinary showcase at Jia CURATED 2025.

From 14 to 18 August, visitors to the Bali Festival Park are invited to experience Wang Sinawang, an immersive installation that beautifully intertwines the traditions of The Balvenie, specifically the intriguing processes of Home Grown Barley and the Malting Floor, both integral to the brand’s revered Five Rare Crafts.

As the only distillery in Scotland that rigorously upholds all Five Rare Crafts: Home Grown Barley, the Malting Floor, Copper Stills, Cooperage and the expertise of the Malt Master, The Balvenie embodies a philosophy rooted in time, dedication and meticulous human craftsmanship. The Makers Project aims to highlight the skilled artisans and thoughtful processes behind whisky production, urging visitors to take a step back and appreciate the artistry and heritage involved in crafting something with intention and care.

Lianggono describes Wang Sinawang as a Javanese phrase inviting humans to pause, observe and truly experience. “The beauty lies not only in what is made but in how it is created, shaped by careful processes, the passage of time and the irreplaceable wisdom of human hands. Much like whisky and memory, some things are refined not by haste but by presence. It’s the moments of waiting that teach us to truly see,” he explains. Within the installation, guests will find themselves enveloped by natural textures, layered visuals and rhythmic soundscapes, all reflecting the patience and care that define the art of whisky making.

The experience goes beyond the installation, with live performances enhancing the ambience and curated whisky flight tastings available daily from noon until 10pm. To kick off this remarkable event, The Balvenie hosted an intimate whisky dinner on 13 August 2025, featuring a Nusantara-inspired menu crafted by Chef Wayan Kresna Yasa of Kaum Restaurant. Guests savoured a selection of The Balvenie’s finest single malts, exploring the warm nuttiness of the DoubleWood 12 Year Old, the tropical complexity of the Caribbean Cask 14 Year Old, and the elegant floral and oak notes of the French Oak 16 Year Old, all while being guided by Jyri Pylkkänen, the Southeast Asia Regional Malts Brand Ambassador.

“Our collaboration with Lianggono perfectly embodies the shared passion for craftsmanship that defines The Balvenie,” Pylkkänen remarked. “The Makers Project provides a unique opportunity to connect with the artistry behind every drop of whisky, crafted with heart and soul.” This remarkable blend of Scotland’s rich whisky heritage and Indonesia’s artistic expression offers more than just an exhibition, it presents an immersive journey through time, craft and the profound connections that unite us all.
