Michelin Guide, the world’s most coveted and esteemed hotel and restaurant reference guide, in collaboration with the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), has just officially launched the Bangkok edition of the guide. As one of the most-loved culinary capitals in the world, it’s been a long time coming for Bangkok to receive the honour. With a smorgasbord of unique and amazing cuisines – from fine dining restaurants, trendy eateries and street food hawkers, Thailand’s culinary heritage plays an important role in the country’s tourism industry as well as the world’s gastronomic scene.

Michelin Group Managing Director for East Asia and Australia Lionel Dantiacq expressed his enthusiasm about the launch, “We are eager to discover the city’s culinary treasures, and excited to lend our long-standing credibility to Bangkok’s dining scene – playing a part in promoting the rich heritage of Thai cuisine to the world, as well as enhancing travelling experiences, of which local cuisine is an integral part, among domestic and foreign tourists.”

The Michelin Guide has three distinctive categories in its accolades. First is the Stars (from one to three) – identifying quality cuisine by factoring the quality of ingredients, the mastery of techniques and flavours and the level of creativity and consistency. Second is the Bib Gourmands, symbolising the inspectors’ favourites for good value, and the newest one is Plate, which is basically an accolade for good cooking with fresh ingredients.

The Michelin Guide Bangkok makes Thailand the second country in Southeast Asia to receive its own Michelin recognition after Singapore, and the sixth country in Asia after Japan, China, Korea, Singapore and Hong Kong. The guide is published in a bilingual edition (English and Thai) and is available in print and digital versions.

The Michelin Guide Bangkok edition has awarded the two-star accolade to the innovative Indian restaurant Gaggan, the French delight Le Normandie and Mezzaluna – the restaurant with a view serving European delights with Japanese precision. Meanwhile, other crowd favourites like Bo.lan, Nahm, Elements, Ginza Sushi ichi, J’AIME by Jean-Michel Lorain, Chim by Siam Wisdom, L’Atelier de Joël Robuchon, Jay Fai, Paste, Saneeh Jaan, Savelberg, Sra Bua by Kiin Kiin, Sühring and Upstairs at Mikkeller received the one-star distinction.
