The Best of British

Relish the prospect of eating excellent unpretentious British cuisine at an affordable price created by one of the world’s foremost chefs? Head to Bread Street Kitchen.

Foie gras ballantine, fruit chutney and toasted brioche

Back in 2011 when Gordon Ramsay opened the first Bread Street Kitchen near St. Pauls Cathedral in London, it received a mixed reception. Many aloof food critics cried foul, lamenting the depths plumbed by Ramsay, a chef with multiple Michelin-starred restaurants including one of Europe’s finest, the three-star Restaurant Gordon Ramsay in Chelsea, while others merely sat on the fence and thumbed their collective noses.

Since then, Bread Street Kitchen has grown and includes outlets in Singapore and Hong Kong. Despite this popularity the concept continues to be as divisive as Ramsay himself. For people expecting a Ramsay-style three-Michelin star experience, Bread Street Kitchen will disappoint. For the majority, who relish the prospect of dishes created by one of the world’s foremost chefs, it will most certainly delight.

Gordon Ramsay

I openly confess Ramsay won me over with his willingness to drop the pomp and regalia that usually accompanies the finest restaurants, and of course the intimidating price tag. At Bread Street Kitchen he concentrates on high quality, often innovative unpretentious British cuisine, with some unexpected European influences and a very impressive drinks list.

The original Bread Street Kitchen Hong Kong closed last year and relocated to The Peak Galleria, a leisure and shopping complex at Victoria Gap near the summit of Victoria Peak. With spectacular views over Hong Kong, the new restaurant features a warehouse-style interior design with a combination of vintage and modern décor based heavily on the original London restaurant.

Like its predecessor, the new eatery retains its tag as a fashionable hang-out, the name alone ensures it would, but in the cut-throat Hong Kong dining scene, the gastronomic experience has to match the hype if a restaurant is to survive. With the Bread Street Kitchen concept, Ramsay has created a winning recipe that will appeal to the city’s judicious diners.

Open for breakfast, brunch, lunch, dinner and drinks, Bread Street Kitchen ticks all the boxes for people wanting to enjoy celebrity chef food and drinks in an overtly instagramable setting. The menu offers classic British dishes, including Ramsay’s signature beef wellington, shepherd’s pie and the forever favourite fish and chips served with mushy marrow fat peas and curry sauce.

Diners can also indulge in a selection of British, Australian, Argentinian and New Zealand dry-aged steaks cooked to perfection over a charcoal-fired Josper grill. While, for breakfast the full English is impressive, but in a nice twist, so is the full vegetarian, while for sweet fans, the pile of pancakes, with mixed berry compote and smooth vanilla cream is a must.

Ramsay’s fine-dining expertise is also on show with dishes like foie gras ballantine served with fruit chutney. For lighter options he presents smoked steak tartare with tacos and smashed avocado on sourdough toast topped with tomato chutney and soft poached eggs.

With a large range of cocktails, like the aptly named Felix Felicis, aka Liquid Luck, and an extensive wine and beer list, at Bread Street Kitchen, Ramsay brings his excellent cuisine to the masses.
