The Negroni

The Negroni

So, you’re at a swanky bar and want to impress your colleagues, the bartender, or even your date, go ahead and order a Negroni, a deliciously simple cocktail that’s stylish, sophisticated and full of flavour.

The perfect after-work tipple or pre-dinner aperitif, Negroni is made with equal parts Campari, vermouth and gin, garnished with a twist of orange. The godfather of cocktails, it is a serious drink enjoyed by those who truly appreciate the polished simplicity of a quality and perfectly balanced cocktail.

The creation of the Negroni is credited to Fosco Scarselli, a bartender at Caffe Casoni in Florence, Italy. The tale goes that in 1919, Count Camillo Negroni, one of his regular customers, asked for something more energetic than his usual Americano. Scarselli obliged and replaced the soda water with gin and the lemon with a twist of orange. The Negroni was born.

Today, bartenders around the world recreate this classic drink, often imbuing it with a personal twist by using house-made aged oaked vermouth and botanical gins. Perfect for a dinner party, it’s also easy to make at home. Just pour equal measures of gin, vermouth and Campari into a mixing glass, add ice and stir until chilled. Then strain into a rocks glass and garnish with a twist of orange peel.
