Starbucks Indonesia Opens First Stores in Papua

The Jayapura and Abepura stores mark the megabrand’s debut in the easternmost province of the country.

Starbucks Indonesia has spread its wings wider as the brand recently opened its first stores in the Papua region. Mal Jayapura, the provincial capital’s main retail hub will be the first to house a Starbucks store. The store echoes the familiar vernacular of the traditional house of the Dani Tribe from Papua. At the centre of the space is the bar – with its carving pattern inspired by the barista craft. A stunning artwork, created in bold and colourful Papuan batik motifs, depicts the coffee journey that tells the stories of the coffee farming community, barista craft, and the customer connection.

The second store is open in the Abepura area. Unlike previous outlets located inside a shopping centre, the Starbucks Abepura store is located in a business area in the heart of the city with a two-storey self-contained building covering an area of 494sqm. This store has a long bench attached to the wall on the first floor, giving a spacious and comfortable impression to welcome customers. In addition, it also has an outdoor area on its two floors and a massive stencil wood artwork on its wall panel.

“This year we have plans to be present in 10 new cities in Indonesia, and Jayapura is one of them.” Said Anthony McEvoy, leader of PT Sari Coffee Indonesia – the licensee of the Starbucks brand in Indonesia. “This is a milestone for the company, also as part of the celebration of the 20th anniversary of Starbucks in Indonesia.”
