A Fiery Saturday Brunch at waatu

A Fiery Saturday Brunch at waatu

Picture this: it’s a bright and breezy Saturday morning in Bali, there’s no rush to get out of bed, and the day’s agenda entails nothing more than idle relaxation. It’s an ideal setup to make one’s way to waatu, the open-flame grill restaurant at The Ungasan Clifftop Resort, and indulge in the all-you-can-eat Otsumami Japanese Tapas brunch spread.

Every Saturday, waatu welcomes diners to its sunlit dining space for a smoky affair of Japanese-inspired bites. As its name suggests, the two-hour brunch comprises light bites served as otsumami, or shareable small portions of snacks commonly found in an izakaya. Familiar dishes like chicken karaage, yakitori-style miso meatballs, and tamagoyaki are nods to the traditional. Still, they are accompanied by a diverse selection that includes fried calamari, prawn toast, pork ribs, and three different gyoza options. For a sweet note, opt for the Japanese pancake, matcha cheesecake, or simply a plate of chilled watermelons.

CLOCKWISE: FLANK STEAK, KARAAGE CHICKEN, VERDANT SILHOUETTE, PORK RIBS, CHICKEN SKIN RICE, CHAWANMUSHI, SEAWEED SALAD & LOBSTER TAIL

One of the menu’s highlights is the Chawanmushi, a savoury steamed egg custard that’s equally light and filling. It’s a prime demonstration of the kitchen’s proclivity for refined Japanese flavours. But, for an elevated taste of waatu’s signature over-the-coal, gas-free cooking techniques, guests can also indulge in premium upgrades that add flame-grilled succulent lobster tails and juicy flank steaks to their meal.

The atmosphere itself makes this a worthy calendar item on one’s weekend list. A live DJ spinning coastal house tunes creates a laidback energy to ease into a leisurely weekend. Complementing the dining experience is full access to The Ungasan’s infinity-edge pool, offering more ways to kick back, relax, and enjoy an elongated pause at the end of a busy week.
