Gaile Lok, a model who has graced the fashion industry for decades, opens up about her remarkable journey, balancing the demanding worlds of modelling and acting.
E: How did your early experiences in modelling shape your approach to acting?
A: My early days in modelling taught me the significance of presence and confidence in front of the camera. It’s quite similar in acting—understanding angles, lighting and how to convey emotions without words really helped me transition smoothly into film. Both fields demand a strong sense of self-awareness and the ability to adapt.
E: What specific skills from your modelling career have enriched your acting?
A: Modelling has given me a deep understanding of body language and the ability to communicate a lot with minimal movement or dialogue. Expressing emotions through subtle gestures is something I’ve brought into acting. It also instilled in me a sense of resilience and discipline, which are both vital in these industries.
E: What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned about yourself through your work in the entertainment industry?
A: I’ve learned that resilience and staying true to myself are key. In an industry where you’re constantly being judged, it’s easy to lose sight of who you are. I’ve realised how crucial it is to hold onto my identity and values, even while navigating the industry’s expectations.
E: Which trends in the modelling and acting industries excite you the most right now?
A: I’m excited by the growing emphasis on diversity and inclusivity. There’s now more space for people from different backgrounds and body types, which makes the industry more dynamic and representative of the real world. It’s refreshing to see stories being told from a wider range of perspectives.
E: Many people see you as a role model. How do you cope with the pressure of being in the public eye and constantly judged on your appearance?
A: It can be challenging, but I remind myself that beauty comes in many forms. I focus on being healthy, both physically and mentally, rather than chasing societal standards. I’ve learned to embrace who I am, imperfections and all, and I hope that message resonates with others too. I surround myself with honest, genuine people who aren’t afraid to tell me the truth. I’m not one to try and please everyone. I stay busy with new passions, wellness projects and self-care practices like saunas and ice baths. I may have fears, but being alone isn’t one of them—perhaps you could even call me an introvert.
E: Outside of modelling, what are your hobbies and passions?
A: I love being outdoors—whether it’s hiking, swimming or going for long walks. Yoga and meditation are also a big part of my life; they help keep me grounded. Besides that, painting and photography are my creative outlets away from work.
