This October, Motel Mexicola sets the stage for an explosive Día de los Muertos across its three locations in Seminyak, Canggu, and Uluwatu for a night of remembrance, ritual, folklore, and celebration.
Motel Mexicola has never been shy about its homage to Mexican culture. So, it doesn’t come as a surprise that Halloween at its three outlets in Seminyak, Canggu, and Uluwatu are all centred around the traditions of Día de los Muertos, or the Day of the Dead.
Though the celebration draws from the Mexican holiday of remembering those who have passed, this year’s atmosphere leans towards traditions and corazón, or the heart, rather than anything overtly spooky. That distinction shapes the evening, giving the occasion a sense of ceremony before the music gradually takes over.
In true Mexican style, photographs and altars fill the casa-style interiors, turning each corner into a vibrant ofrenda. Throughout the evening, La Catrina, La Bruja, and El Charro de la Muerte, the holiday’s iconic figures, appear among the tables, creating an interactive experience for patrons.
The kitchen brings the tradition to the table with a dedicated selection of Día de los Muertos specials. Flor de Calabaza Rellena pairs squash blossom with prawns, chorizo, and adobo negro, while Los Pollos Hermanos comes with pipian rojo and encurtidos. Pan de Muerto, a traditional Mexican bread, is served with hot chocolate.
The evening starts early for those arriving in costume. From 6pm to 9pm, guests who show up in their best Day of the Dead garb receive a complimentary Margarita Sangrienta, while face painting adds to the festivities. As dinner gives way to music, the room grows louder and the characters move through the crowd. What begins as a night of remembrance gradually becomes a shared celebration, bringing comida, corazón y vida into the same crowded room.
